Who should enroll?
People with intermediate levels of
English who want to improve listening and speaking skills. We
specialize in helping people with good grammar and vocabulary skills
who haven't had many opportunities to practice speaking.
Beginning level learners must advance to an intermediate level
before entering the course, because a strict "English Only" rule is
enforced in the classroom. Students enrolling in the course should
at least know the 2000 words at the back of the Longman's English
Language Dictionary.
Advanced level learners are also advised not to enroll. Advanced
speakers often feel the class is too slow, because it's designed to
meet the needs of intermediate level learners. It is possible for
advanced learners to benefit, but they cannot expect the same
significant level of improvement as the intermediate learners.
How should I prepare?
Don't worry about preparing in advance unless you don't know the
2000 words at the back of Longman's English Language Dictionary.
Our goal is not to complete a certain number of books. Our goal is
to get students to speak, speak, speak in class. So, the best way to
prepare is to come with an open mind and willingness to participate
with your fellow classmates. Check out the ABC's

ESEC classroom rules.
There are a few things you may want to know before coming to ESEC
class. First, we have an "English Only" rule - and we take it
seriously. In order to get our students to use the English they
already know, we make the classroom an English only environment.
That means no one may speak Chinese or any other language during
class. It also means that all Chinese dictionaries are prohibited,
including electronic dictionaries. Only English-English dictionaries
may be used during class. It is a difficult rule to follow, but our
students benefit.
Cell phones are also prohibited in the classroom. Ringing phones
are a disturbance to the class, but more importantly, they require
you to speak Chinese...
ESEC classroom philosophy.
ESEC uses modern TEFL methods. Therefore, our teachers do not
speak during the whole class time. Students speak with each other,
giving everyone ample opportunity to speak and increase fluency. The
teachers do not constantly correct students' grammar or pronunciation
mistakes. If they did, the students would stop speaking so as not to
make a mistake. The teachers do, however, take time to address
common grammar errors and practice pronunciation. At that time,
teachers will directly address those errors. The students will not
complete every chapter in every book. We use the books as tools to
teach patterns and to practice listening and speaking. Therefore, we
do not focus on finishing a book.
ESEC classes will challenge you to try a new way of learning -
with the focus on the student instead
of the teacher!
Come prepared to have fun!
This addresses methodology and philosophy: we believe you will
learn more when you're having fun! First, it will help you to forget
yourself and enjoy the process. Second, it's true, people learn
better when they are interested. So don't be surprised if there are
many fun activities in your classes. There's actually a purpose for
it.
Does ESEC offer a certificate?
Yes, ESEC offers a certificate to students who complete our
standard training program. Only students who complete the program by
actively participating in classes and completing the required number
of hours will receive the certificate.
